The Valley Is Not One Kind of Dirt

Excavation in the Fraser Valley means dealing with very different ground depending on where you are. Sumas Prairie and the low farmland around Chilliwack sit on silt and clay that holds water all winter. Mission and Sumas Mountain are hillside country, where cuts, benches and retaining walls matter more than drainage ditches. Langley and Abbotsford acreages fall somewhere in between, with hardpan layers that look fine in August and turn to soup in November.

That is why season and soil drive how we plan a job. Pads, driveways and anything that needs compaction are best built in the dry months, roughly April through September, when fill goes down tight and stays there. The wet season is when we diagnose and fix drainage, because standing water shows you exactly where the problem is. If your project can be sequenced around the weather, we will tell you honestly which parts should wait.

Before any bucket touches the ground: we submit a BC 1 Call locate request so gas, hydro and telecom lines are marked, and we walk the property with you to flag private lines like septic, irrigation and power to outbuildings. Call before you dig is not optional practice, it is how everyone stays safe and your services stay connected.

How a job runs

  1. Call or send the form. Describe the property and the goal. Most jobs can be priced from a short conversation and a site visit.
  2. Firm quote. You get a written price covering machine time, operator, trucking and disposal. No open-ended hourly surprises on defined scopes.
  3. Locates and prep. BC 1 Call locates go in, access is planned, and any permits your municipality needs are sorted before the machine arrives.
  4. The work. We dig, clear, grade, trench or demo, haul away what leaves and place what arrives, then leave the site clean and ready for the next trade.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does excavation cost in the Fraser Valley?

Most excavation work in the Fraser Valley is billed as a machine plus operator rate. Typical rates run about $130 to $180 per hour for a mini excavator and $160 to $220 per hour for a mid-size machine, with dump truck and disposal charged on top. Most contractors, including us, apply a half-day minimum. For defined jobs like a building pad, driveway or trench, we quote a firm price up front instead of an open-ended hourly bill.

Do I need to call BC 1 Call before you dig?

We handle it, and yes, a BC 1 Call utility locate request is standard practice before any digging in BC. The service is free, but requests should go in at least three business days before work starts so gas, hydro and telecom locates come back in time. Private lines (septic, irrigation, wiring to outbuildings) are not covered by BC 1 Call, so we also walk the property with you before we dig.

What is the best time of year for excavation work in the Fraser Valley?

The dry season, roughly April through September, is best for most earthworks because Fraser Valley soils are workable and compaction is reliable. October through March is the wet season, when clay and silt soils turn greasy and some jobs should wait. Drainage work is the exception: wet months show exactly where water goes, which makes them a good time to diagnose and fix drainage problems.

Do you work on acreages and farm properties?

Yes, acreage and farm work is a core part of what we do: building pads for shops and barns, gravel driveways and yard areas, ditching and field drainage, fence line clearing and trenching for water or power out to outbuildings. We are used to working around livestock, crops and farm schedules across Abbotsford, Chilliwack, Langley and the rest of the valley.

Can you work on sloped or hillside lots?

Yes. Hillside work in Mission, on Sumas Mountain and on the Chilliwack bench is part of our regular workload: benching building sites into slopes, cutting driveways to a workable grade, and excavating for retaining walls. Steep sites need more planning around soil conditions and water management, and walls over 1.2 metres need an engineer, so we scope these jobs carefully before quoting.

Do you haul away the material you dig out or clear?

Yes. We load and haul spoil, stumps, brush and demolition debris to approved disposal or recycling sites, and we can bring in structural fill, road base and drain rock on the return trip. Disposal is quoted as part of the job so there are no surprise dump fees on your invoice.
